We are very close to the start of the Enrollment period 2021/2022 for Obamacare.
What is Obamacare?
Obamacare is the name by which the Affordable Care Act is known. It was signed on March 23, 2010 and promoted by then President Barack Obama. It is a Health Reform aimed at making health insurance more accessible and affordable for everyone.
When we say affordable, we mean that. Obamacare provides health subsidies to individuals and families, based on age, household size, and income. The insurance covers numerous treatments and health situations that were not covered before. It is more accessible than ever, because now people with pre-existing diseases and pregnant women cannot be turned away by insurers.
How does Obamacare work?
The Affordable Care Act establishes an open enrollment period, known as Obamacare Open Enrollment.
This period begins on November 1st and ends on January 15th. Only in the Open Enrollment can you apply for Obamacare, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
In case you do not have health coverage through your employer, Medicare, Medicaid, you can get your insurance through the Insurance Marketplace.
If you qualify for an Obama Care health plan, the government gives you a subsidy that helps you pay for a large portion of your health insurance.
Who qualifies for Obamacare?
Those who have legal status in the United States and who meet certain income requirements and reported taxes qualify for Obama Care.
The 10 Essential Benefits of Obamacare
Whether you buy health insurance from Obamacare, from a private company or through your employer, you can receive the “10 essential benefits” for health care:
1) Preventive care, general check-ups, chronic disease treatments
2) Prescription drugs
3) Medical emergencies
7) Pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum
8) Psychiatry, addiction treatments
9) Rehabilitation Therapies
10) Outpatient care
This initiative enabled, for the first time, more than 40 million people to have health insurance in the United States. This population, until that moment, had no way to support their health expenses because they did not qualify for this benefit. They did not meet the requirements of the insurance companies. Obamacare came to change that landscape.
The Affordable Health Act expanded the Medicaid program, covers more low-income adults, and subsidizes private health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
Health Insurance Marketplace and Obamacare
The health insurance marketplace is a platform that offers all types of health plans from private insurers. It provides insurance agents with the ability to consult all the medical insurance options that individuals, families and companies have.
